Here is a pic of the stems on a jig for my 16 foot canoe project. The inner stem is three 3/4 wide by 1/4 thick pine and the outer is the same in walnut. My friend and I used a homemade steamer made out of a coffee can, pvc pipe and a hand held curtain steamer. After 30 min. the wood bent like butter. It was held on the jig for one week and had very little spring back. The stations went up on the strongback 12 in. apart and you can't get the size of the canoe by the pics, I sit it out in the driveway last week and got a look at it from 20 feet away and said to myself "man thats big". The last pic is me having a cold one after setting all the stations. I have most of my summer projects done so I can get back to work on it buy September. It will take about 200 hrs to finish.

This weekend, I went to a Garadge sale that aadvertised tools, and I ran into a Gil-Built 6 X 48 in belt sander. When I was a kid, I wanted one of these things real bad. Now, at 65 yrs old,I found it and bought it. I noticed that the belt hadrubbed the edge oof the aluminum base. My thought is to use som JB Weld after cleaning the area with a cleaner. The belt ground a groove about 2/3 of the way through the alluminum. Do You think that I will get enough strengh by repairing this way? I can tear it down and have it welded back up Give Me Your input. Thanks it return, The Dutchman

I'm building a dust tray for my ambient air cleaner to replace the plastic bag diaper, and have a couple of related fastening questions. Wood/wood is pretty straightforward, but I don't have much experience gluing wood or MDF to other materials.

1) MDF/Acrylic
I need to mount a thin circular sheet of acrylic inside a ~12" diameter hole with a routed rabbet edge. Essentially this is a window in the MDF, and the acrylic is cut to 'snap' into the rabbet (IOW, a tight fit). I'd prefer not to have to mechanically (brads/screws) fasten this if possible, and the joint needs to be air-tight.

2) MDF/Aluminum
Similarly, I want to fasten a thin strip of aluminum around the circumference of a 3/4" MDF round approximately 18" in diameter. This is basically an edge band. Mechanical fasteners are less of an issue for this, but I'd still prefer to avoid them if possible.

What glue would you recommend for these jobs? Poly?
Does is matter if the MDF has been coated with varnish and/or sealed with shellac?

Any tips would be most welcome!

Son and daughter-in-law wanted something they could use for storage and as a bench near the entrance-way to their house. Outside dimensions are about 43 in. long by 22 in. wide; the seat, with cushion, will be about 22 in. high.

To make it blend with their existing furniture, I used a spline arrangement with the boards edge-trimmed (see "Spline Construction Detail) with a 45 degree campher bit. The splines are 1/4 in. baltic birch left over from another project. All of the boards in the body of the chest are assembled this way. The only place were screws or pins were used was in the base and legs. The floor in their house is tiled so I included levelers at all four corners, as shown in one of the photos. All wood, except the plywood splines, base and seat are alder.

The inside of the chest will be unstained and finished with two coats each of SealCoat and Fast Dry PolyU. The outside will be stained to blend with existing furniture, then finished with SealCoat either wipe-on or Fast Dry PolyU.

I haven't figured out how to make the photos appear in correct sequence, so they are labeled.

Thanks for looking, regards,
Steve

The Old Man And A Bucket Of Shrimp

It happened every Friday evening, almost without fail, when the sun resembled a giant orange and was starting to dip into the blue ocean.

It happened every Friday evening, almost without fail, when the sun resembled a giant orange and was starting to dip into the blue ocean.

Old Ed came strolling along the beach to his favorite pier. Clutched in his bony hand was a bucket of shrimp. Ed walks out to the end of the pier, where it seems he almost has the world to himself. The glow of the sun is a golden bronze now.

Everybody's gone, except for a few joggers on the beach. Standing out on the end of the pier, Ed is alone with his thoughts...and his bucket of shrimp.

Before long, however, he is no longer alone. Up in the sky a thousand white dots come screeching and squawking, winging their way toward that lanky frame standing there on the end of the pier.

Before long, dozens of seagulls have enveloped him, their wings fluttering and flapping wildly. Ed stands there tossing shrimp to the hungry birds. As he does, if you listen closely, you can hear him say with a smile, 'Thank you. Thank you.'

In a few short minutes the bucket is empty. But Ed doesn't leave.

He stands there lost in thought, as though transported to another time and place.

When he finally turns around and begins to walk back toward the beach, a few of the birds hop along the pier with him until he gets to the stairs, and then they, too, fly away. And old Ed quietly makes his way down to the end of the beach and on home.

If you were sitting there on the pier with your fishing line in the water, Ed might seem like 'a funny old duck,' as my dad used to say. Or, 'a guy that's a sandwich shy of a picnic,' as my kids might say. To onlookers, he's just another old codger, lost in his own weird world, feeding the seagulls with a bucket full of shrimp.

To the onlooker, rituals can look either very strange or very empty. They can seem altogether unimportant ....maybe even a lot of nonsense.

Old folks often do strange things, at least in the eyes of Boomers and Busters.

Most of them would probably write Old Ed off, down there in Florida . That's too bad. They'd do well to know him better.

His full name: Eddie Rickenbacker. He was a famous hero back in World War II. On one of his flying missions across the Pacific, he and his seven-member crew went down. Miraculously, all of the men survived, crawled out of their plane, and climbed into a life raft.

Captain Rickenbacker and his crew floated for days on the rough waters of the Pacific. They fought the sun. They fought sharks. Most of all, they fought hunger. By the eighth day their rations ran out. No food. No water. They were hundreds of miles from land and no one knew where they were.

They needed a miracle. That afternoon they had a simple devotional service and prayed for a miracle. They tried to nap Eddie leaned back and pulled his military cap over his nose. Time dragged. All he could hear was the slap of the waves against the raft.

Suddenly, Eddie felt something land on the top of his cap. It was a seagull!

Old Ed would later describe how he sat perfectly still, planning his next move. With a flash of his hand and a squawk from the gull, he managed to grab it and wring its neck.. He tore the feathers off, and he and his starving crew made a meal - a very slight meal for eight men - of it. Then they used the intestines for bait.. With it, they caught fish, which gave them food and more bait......and the cycle continued. With that simple survival technique, they were able to endure the rigors of the sea until they were found and rescued (after 24 days at sea...).

Eddie Rickenbacker lived many years beyond that ordeal, but he never forgot the sacrifice of that first lifesaving seagull. And he never stopped saying, 'Thank you.' That's why almost every Friday night he would walk to the end of the pier with a bucket full of shrimp and a heart full of gratitude.
PS: Eddie started Eastern Airlines.

Almost finish with the new bedroom for my little girl that is turning 3 next month. She's moving on to the big girl room. We ordered the furniture since I have not had any shop time because of family, school, work, honey-do-this-lists and we're still waiting for it to be delivered. Anyway, the floor is bamboo flooring that we purchased from Costco when they had them on sale for $1.32 sq/ft and I pretty much bought enough to convert all of the carpeting in the rest of the house to this type of flooring.

I am trying to play around with this video editing program so I hope you don't mind this video clip of the room transformation. The background song is Quequ'un M'a Dit by Carla Bruni.

My DIL is a clinical psychologist and her services are paid through Aetna. The problem is that her computer is a MAC, and Aetna's software is for Windows. She has tried to download their software with their tech help and they are saying it isn't compatible. Is there a patch or something missing?

I do have an extra desktop with Windows XP I could give her if there is no other fix. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Recently I got a letter from Woodworkers Guild of America saying they sent me a woodworking DVD and if I liked it to send them payment, otherwise send the DVD back. Now I've never heard of this guild or the DVD they're talking about. I may have received it but thought it was junk mail at the time and tossed it. Regardless, I never asked them to send it to me in the first place. Is this a total phishing scam and am I right to assume I don't have any responsibility to send them the supposed DVD they sent or pay them for it?

EDIT: DOH!!! Ok I didn't read down far enough because at the bottom it says "Because you didn't ask for this DVD, you are under no obligation to do anything and can consider it a gift."
