Yah the manager's explanation didn't really make sense to me either. But you know what they say about questioning gift horses. My guess is that after they placed the order their system marked it as "used" and in order to make room for the "new" Compucarves they had to discount. Or maybe it was just my lucky day. I probably should have bought a lottery ticket on the way home.

If you haven't already, sign up at the carvewright forum.

I have been thinking about a CompuCarve, but like you the price point for my needs is, well, excessive. Almost bought a used one in September, two days later our dryer quit, so I guess there was a message in there somewhere.

Have fun,
Russ

i have really grown to dislike sears over the last few years. their policies and practices seem to be cut from a different bolt of cloth. however, careful management of their out of frequency behavior can result in some excellent deals, as noted by the OP. a well deserved you suck my man. enjoy th enew toy and use it in good health for many years to come.

Here is a sample I just made. Set up took a little longer than I expected. The head needs to apply a 75-85 pounds of pressure on the workpiece and mine was only doing about 40. After much tinkering and reading the manual and old carvewright forum posts I finally got it to 80. After that it was pretty quick and simple. I originally made a much more elaborate design but after I finished the program estimated it would take about an hour to complete the carving. Since it was just a test I took everything out but the lettering. There is a bit of tear out which I think would come out easily with some sanding. I accidentally knocked a piece of the "E" when I was brushing the dust away. Although you can't really tell in the pic. I'll have to read up more on what types of bits to use in certain situations.
