    Copying Files

I wanted to copy certain files in case my laptop died. I have a portable hard drive, 8GB flash drive, and 8GB discs. The only files I really wanted were "Pictures", "MS Word", "Documents", "Bookmarks and Bookmark Toolbars". I started off with the FD, and thought there was some data already on it, and moved to a disc. Figured out how to get (select) all of the pictures. I haven't tried many, but some of the folders opened up, so I thought that was successful.

But, when I tried to do the "Bookmarks" I could not get them to be read to burn. Is there a tip for doing that?

    Assuming you are using IE:

    1. Open your browser
    2. Click on the Down Arrow next to "add to favorites"
    3. Click on Import & Export
    4. Click on "Export to File"

No, the links are in Firefox/bookmarks/bookmarks toolbar.

I tried that, and couldn't get it to be read on the disk. There's a place for "paste", and it doesn't transfer. When I did my "pictures" I got them all highlighted/copied and they transferred (pasted) just fine.

Maybe I'm not fully understanding the problem, but I transfer or copy files all the time using just the Windows "Explorer" (used to be "Filemanager" under the older systems).

I'm using "Vista", but believe it works the same under "SP". Using Windows Explorer, you can copy or transfer (holding down the "Ctrl" button "copies").

With "Windows Explorer" you simply open a directory, click the top file and hold the "Shift" key while clicking the bottom file and it will select everything inbetween. If you're just selecting certain files to copy, you click the first file, hold the "Ctrl" key and pick each file to select it. When done, you simply select the files with the mouse and cursor them over to the appropriate file media/directory that you want to move or copy them to.

I use this simple method all the time, have done it for years and it's almost a daily or weekly task. Never has failed for me.

Only caveat I have is under "Vista" it sometimes changes the file date... I don't know why that is, but I don't know how to remedy it.

To expedite this task, I have kept all my essential files needing occasional back-up under a directory named "00Files" and therein they are catagorized into subdirectories. I set this up on Day 1 of a new computer and keep all of my files in their catagorized subdirectories. That way, I don't have to go searching and possibly missing something.

            I hope this helps,

It seems to be a simple thing to do, but nothing works. I'm using Firefox. I insert a DVD. I want to copy "All Bookmarks" to the DVD. What are the steps?

                in firefox go to
                bookmarks
                show all bookmarks
                import and backup
                backup or export to html
backup will create a json file
                save to computer
                copy to dvd
